David Boynton, Director of Product Development and Training

David BoyntonAs our Director of Product Development and Training, David is involved in a wide variety of projects throughout SEM. For clients, he focuses on developing a customized mix of products and services, addressing the challenges and opportunities unique to each project. For team members, he coordinates curriculum for our technical and leadership training efforts. Currently, David is taking this approach to the next level by laying the groundwork for ‘SEM University,’ a comprehensive repository for in-house knowledge and best practices. Check out his contributions to The Smart Energy Exchange, SEM’s blog, by clicking here.

One of SEM’s longest-serving team members, David is able to help out with just about any aspect of the company. He previously served as our Director of Solar Services, and his wealth of knowledge and experience is not without recognition: he has the impressive distinction of being one of only four people in the country with three separate certifications from NABCEP, the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. Specifically, his certifications are in Solar PV Technical Sales, Solar PV Installation, and Solar Thermal Installation.

David attended Hamilton College in New York State with a BA in Physics. He went on to earn his MS in Environmental Engineering from Colorado State University and worked as a science teacher at private high schools around the country. Given his commitment to sustainability and to the spirit of SEM, it is not surprising that he loves his work: “it’s an invitation every day to sit down with smart people and work on great things.”

David grew up in Michigan, using any excuse to get outdoors and play in the water and the woods. He now lives in Pittsboro and drives a sweet waste-vegetable-oil station wagon. When he’s not at SEM, he can be found hanging out with his wife, Emily, and their sons, Daniel and Willie. He also loves to hit the trails on his bike when he can.
